Description

This Almond Puff Pastry recipe features flaky, golden squares filled with a rich almond mixture, topped with sliced almonds and a dusting of powdered sugar. Perfect as a delightful breakfast treat or an elegant dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry

Almond Filling

  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup almond flour
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg white
  • 1 teaspoon water

Topping

  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400℉ and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
  2. Thaw Puff Pastry: Remove the sheet of puff pastry from the freezer and let it thaw slightly on the counter while preparing the almond filling.
  3. Mix Almond Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine softened butter, sugar, almond flour, egg yolk, and almond extract until smooth and well incorporated.
  4. Prepare Filling Bag: Spoon the almond filling into a resealable baggie, seal it, and set it aside for piping later.
  5. Cut Puff Pastry: Place the puff pastry on a clean surface and open it into a square. Cut the square evenly into 9 smaller squares and arrange them on the lined baking sheet.
  6. Score Borders: Using a small sharp knife, gently score a smaller square inside each puff pastry square about 1 centimeter from the edges to create a border that will puff up while baking.
  7. Fill Pastry Squares: Cut one corner off the filling baggie and carefully squeeze the almond filling into the inner area of each puff pastry square.
  8. Apply Egg Wash: Whisk together the egg white and water. Brush this mixture onto the outer borders of each puff pastry square to achieve a shiny, golden finish.
  9. Add Almond Topping: Sprinkle sliced almonds evenly over the filled almond mixture on each pastry square.
  10. Bake Pastries: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up nicely.
  11. Dust with Powdered Sugar: Once baked and slightly cooled, dust the pastries with powdered sugar for a sweet finishing touch.
  12. Serve: Serve the Almond Puff Pastries warm or at room temperature for optimal flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Store pastries at room temperature for up to 3 days and rewarm in the microwave, toaster oven, or conventional oven for best texture.
  • Pastries can be frozen before or after baking; thaw or warm before serving.
  • Use almond flour as specified for authentic almond flavor and texture; ground blanched almonds can be a substitute.
  • If puff pastry is not available, homemade or store-bought frozen puff pastry sheets can be used.
